12 Most Beautiful Churches in the World

9.Church of St. George

Lalibela, in the Ethiopian highlands, was built by King Lalibela to be the ‘New Jerusalem,’ and it is home to eleven spectacular monolithic churches. Between the 7th and 13th centuries, these were hewn from the top down through live rock, with an elaborate network of tunnels and corridors connecting them.

Because it is so perfectly carved into the slope, the Church of St. George is arguably the most important and spectacular of the bunch. The church, built in the style of a Greek cross, stands 12 meters tall and has stunning artworks within its evocative interior. The church and Lalibela are still prominent pilgrimage sites and one of the highlights of every trip to Ethiopia.
