The largest church in the world, St. Peter’s Basilica, is located in Vatican City, which also serves as the papal residence and the headquarters of the Catholic church. The basilica was constructed between 1506 and 1626 under Pope Julius II’s order and was designed to be the largest structure in all of Christendom. Legendary architects Bramante, Raphael, and Michelangelo all contributed to its construction.The magnificent Renaissance-style church, which bears the name of the revered saint whose tomb is located inside, boldly displays a huge front and dome, with the colonnade-lined St. Peter’s Square leading up to it.
