There must be a Southeast Asian volcano hike on the list, and in our opinion, that hike should be to Gunung Rinjani in Indonesia. While the island of Lombok rises to a dizzying height of 12,224 feet (3,726m) at the peak of this massive lake-capped volcano, which still occasionally rumbles into life, most recently in 2016, the lovely beaches of Lombok simmer at sea level.
As one of Asia’s favorite excursions, climbing Gunung Rinjani is right up there with hiking the Himalaya. The last ascent begins in the dark in order to reach the crater rim just as dawn breaks through the darkness, revealing the crater lake and its ominous cinder cones resembling a dinosaur valley.
