Top 10 Treks In The World

2. GR20, Corsica, France

People who enjoy challenges should go on this hike.

Round trip distance: 104 miles (168 kilometers).

Time frame: 15 days

Level: challenging

This character-building walk through Corsica is famed for the variety of landscapes it passes through and the level of tenacity required of those who brave its tough trails. To conquer, there are forests, granite moonscapes, windswept craters, glacial lakes, rivers, peat bogs, maquis, snow-capped peaks, plains, and névés (stretches of ice produced from snow), and the difficult terrain weeds out all but the most determined hikers.

The GR20, which was established in 1972, connects the towns of Calenzana in the Balagne and Conca north of Porto Vecchio, although the thrills are not easy to come by. The trail is rugged, uneven, and frequently steep, with rickety bridge crossings and exposed scrambles over slippery rock faces and loose, skittering scree–all part of the adventure! You’ll be fetching water from springs and staying in rustic mountain refuges for two weeks, but you’ll be able to brag to the world that you’ve completed Europe’s most difficult trek.
