7 New Wonders Of The World

7. Taj Mahal, India

One of the most iconic buildings in the world and considered to be the best example of Mughal architecture is the mausoleum complex in Agra, India. It was built by Emperor Shah Jahan (1628-58) in honor of his wife Mumtz Maal (“Chosen One of the Palace”), who died in 1631 while giving birth to their 14th child. The complex, which has a big garden with a reflecting pool, was constructed by 20,000 workers over the course of about 22 years. Semiprecious stones set in geometric and floral patterns adorn the white marble mausoleum. Its large central dome is surrounded by four lesser domes. According to some sources, Shah Jahan wanted a black marble mausoleum built for himself.
