7 New Wonders Of The World

5.Christ the Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro

The colossal monument of Jesus known as Christ the Redeemer is located on Mount Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro. It all started in the initial years following World War I, when some Brazilians feared a “tide of godlessness.” They proposed a statue, which was finally created by Heitor da Silva Costa, Carlos Oswald, and Paul Landowski. Beginning in 1926, construction was completed in 1927. Without including the foundation, which is about 26 feet (8 meters) high, the final monument has a height of 98 feet (30 meters) and a length of 92 feet (28 meters). It is the largest Art Deco sculpture ever created. The reinforced concrete structure of Christ the Redeemer is covered in around six million tiles. Uncomfortably, lightning has repeatedly struck the statue, and a storm in 2014 damaged the right thumb tip of Jesus.
